This writer makes a case that cycle touring is hard work and dirty to boot .

Bicycle Touring ProBicycle Touring Is Hard

My experience is different, my planning is different.
First, cycle touring is an adventure. If you take the journey with an open mind  and be receptive to what you find you will be amazed.

Also when choosing your route pick a distance you are comfortable and with limited traffic allowing time to “smell the roses” and see the lighthouses, museums, forts, walled medieval towns, countryside. A bicycle tour should not be an endurance race.

I always go cycle touring with another person to share the experiences and assist along the way, it makes for a better trip. Generally I just mention it to members of my local bicycle club and there is always someone or several people who are willing to join.
I always built in time to arrive in my destination early enough to relax and perhaps have a drink, its less stress. Sometimes you do get delayed along the way so if time is built in you do not need to panic.

The journey is what makes cycle touring so great whether it be in Wisconsin or France.  Accommodation can be fun whether camping, using bed and breakfasts or quaint inns if you take the time to research in advance so they are something to look forward to.
Of course, you do need to train and be in sharp prior to your journey.

Cycle touring is not hard, it is a way to explore the world that does take some physical exercise while providing fresh air,  great scenery and new experiences.
